Juniorschool > Grade 3 and Grade 4 Picnic Outing to Big Barn Farm
On August 30th 2024, the Grade 3 and 4 students embarked on an exciting picnic outing to Big Barn Farm. The day was eagerly anticipated by both students and teachers, promising a mix of fun, learning, and bonding outside the classroom.
The students gathered at the school early in the morning, filled with excitement. After a quick briefing on safety and behaviour expectations, the group set off at 7:00 AM. The bus ride to Big Barn Farm was filled with chatter, laughter, and music, which only heightened the anticipation. Upon arrival at the farm at 9:00 AM, we were greeted by the farm staff who gave us a warm welcome with some delicious and healthy breakfast. The students were divided into small groups, each accompanied by their class teachers and a staff member of the farm and the adventure began.
The farm visit was structured around various engaging activities designed to provide the students with a hands-on learning experience about farm life. The students had the opportunity to feed the animals like cows and fish. They learned about the animals’ diets and behaviours. Many students were excited to pet the animals, and this experience was both thrilling and educational. The children also experienced an exciting tractor ride around the farm which they enjoyed.
The importance of sustainable farming practices which sparked a lot of curiosity among the students was explained to them and later they were given an opportunity to sow fenugreek seeds in a small pot as a takeaway gift from the farm. This activity allowed the students to take a piece of the farm back home with them.
After the morning activities, the students enjoyed a picnic lunch in a designated area under the shade of large trees. The delicious lunch was followed by some free playtime and music. A meditation session too was conducted by the farm staff to relax the children after the tiring day.
By 3:00 PM, it was time to say goodbye to Big Barn Farm. The students boarded the bus, tired but happy, with many expressing how much they had learned and enjoyed the day. We arrived back at school at 5:00 PM, where the students were picked up by their parents.
The picnic outing to Big Barn Farm was a resounding success. The students not only had a day of fun and relaxation but also gained valuable insights into farm life and sustainable agriculture. The outing reinforced the importance of experiential learning, allowing students to connect classroom lessons with real-world experiences. We look forward to organizing more such outings that combine education with enjoyment.
